Peugeot held their 2nd competition for aspiring automotive designers. The brief was as follows:
“Delve into the history of the Peugeot brand and imagine the vehicle that Peugeot could evolve into in the coming years – a vehicle replete with stylistic references to classic Peugeot models of the past.”
The winner was the talented Stephen Schulze of Germany and his stunning 4002 design. One of the most creative car design concepts in decades, the organically-shaped 4002 is both futuristic as well as replete with styling cues from Peugeots of the past, such as the headlights behind the radiator grille that was seen in the Peugeot 402 of the 1930s.
Though the 4002 is too extreme a design to anticipate any plans for production in the short-term, it may well be an impetus for future exciting cars from one of Europe’s oldest and most successful car manufacturers.
Outlandish, glamorous, and utterly inspired, Peugeot’s 4002 supercoupe was, without question, the most fabulous concept at this year’s Frankfurt show. In a show whose “concept cars” often looked as production-ready as their production-car standmates, the 4002 stood as a rare and defiant exception—a dream car of the highest order. The winner of Peugeot’s second design competition, which attracted 2800 entries from 90 countries, the retro-futuristic 4002 was drawn within three deceptively simple guidelines: It had to have a clear association with the French marque, it had to recall one of Peugeot’s historic models, and it had to be innovative, creative, and original. The designer, a 32-year-old graphic artist from Germany named Stephan Schulze, took his inspiration from Peugeot’s gorgeous 402 of 1936, and earned a cool 5000 euros for his efforts.
